Latest core question file

The latest core question file was released on 11/6/05. It contains 1120 questions (320 more questions than the original core question file that comes with Tournament Trivia v1.0). In the unregistered version of Tournament Trivia, only 400 of these questions are made available to players.

To update your core question file:

  • Before updating your trivia file, please make sure that no users are currently playing Tournament Trivia at the moment.

  • Download DATABASE.ZIP  [40K].  Unzip the file to your Tournament Trivia directory, over-writing the older version of database.enc there.

Third-Party trivia databases

Third-party question files are public-domain trivia databases from other freeware trivia games, converted into Tournament Trivia's file formats by third-party developers.

Database and description Total # of
Questions
*
Download site
MisterHouse trivia:  Large trivia database.  Pick-and-choose from 4 topical files, or simply use the included MH_ALL.ENC file which includes all the questions in a single file. 1750 Roughneck BBS web site
Open Trivia:  Large trivia database.  Pick-and-choose from 11 topical files, or simply use the included OT_ALL.ENC file which includes all the questions in a single file. 1594 Roughneck BBS web site

* In the unregistered version of Tournament Trivia, only the first 150 questions from third-party trivia files are loaded.  This restriction is removed in the registered version.

How to use third-party trivia databases:

  • Third-party trivia databases come in zip files, which include one or more .ENC question files.  These ENC files can then be imported into Tournament Trivia. These files are encoded, so that trivia players cannot cheat and see the answers by simply downloading these files.

  • Typically, the zip will include a number of sorted-by-topic ENC files, as well as a *_ALL.ENC file which includes all of the database's questions in a single file. You can pick and choose individual topic files to add, or you can use the *_all.enc file to add all the questions (of all topics) at once.

  • To import an ENC file into Tournament Trivia, first unzip the desired ENC files into your Tournament Trivia directory.  Next, you must enter the game in Local Mode (in door32) or with a Sysop account (in Synchronet).  Then, use the in-game "config" command to bring up the sysop configuration menu.  From this menu, you may configure a total of 10 ENC files for Tournament Trivia to use. (Consult the sysop docs for more info on the Config command)

Additional notes:

  • These third-party databases are NOT maintained, created, converted, distributed, or copyrighted by the author of Tournament Trivia. Copyright notices and original downloaded locations should be provided in README files of all third-party databases. The quality, difficulty, freshness, and accuracy of these trivia files may vary, as compared to Tournament Trivia's Core Question database.  Many of these questions are of high quality, but others may not be; you'll have to try different third-party files and evaluate them yourself.

  • Please be aware that if you add all 3000+ available third-party questions at once, they will then greatly outnumber the game's stock Core Question database. One solution may be to rotate these third-party question files on a weekly/monthly basis if desired, by simply changing which ENC files are enabled in the game's configuration.

  • In the unregistered version of Tournament Trivia, only 150 questions from third-party files will be loaded into the game.  In the registered version, this question limit is removed.

  • If you are a programmer who knows of a freeware / public-domain trivia question database that you would like to convert to Tournament Trivia's file format, please e-mail Tournament Trivia's author for more information on how to do this.
